National Lifeguard Instructor

The National Lifeguard Instructor course provides candidates with an understanding of the principles and practices on which the National Lifeguard program is based and explores teaching approaches and techniques appropriate for National Lifeguard candidates.

After successful completion of the course, National Lifeguard Instructors are certified to teach the National Lifeguard option(s) they hold. For example, candidates who hold National Lifeguard Pool may teach National Lifeguard Pool, candidates who hold National Lifeguard Waterfront may teach National Lifeguard Waterfront, candidates who hold National Lifeguard Waterpark may teach National Lifeguard Waterpark, and candidates who hold National Lifeguard Surf may teach National Lifeguard Surf.

National Lifeguard Instructors evaluate most items in National Lifeguard, but only current National Lifeguard Examiners may certify candidates.

Duration: 16 hours
Time Breakdown: 10 hours classroom + 6 hours water
Prerequisites: National Lifeguard (any option) and Lifesaving Instructor certifications (need not be current)
Recommended: Bronze Examiner, experience lifeguarding
Instruction & Certification: Current National Lifeguard Instructor Trainers teach and certify candidates
Candidate Recognition: Certification card
Instructional Format: This certification may be delivered through blended learning or in-person learning
Current Status: National Lifeguard Instructors remain current for 24 months from the certification date

  • National Lifeguard Instructors evaluate most items, but only current National Lifeguard Examiners may certify candidates
  • More instructional time may be required depending on course format, number of candidates, and learning activities selected
  • Instructors remain current by recertifying through the Society’s professional development point system
  • The Lifesaving Society exam fee applies to successful and unsuccessful candidates alike
